I am a parent of children that have and are attending the Holton school district, and my comment on the obesity problem is it usually starts at home. The meals that are being served now have nothing to do with trying to keep kids at weight. It is trying to keep the meal cost as low as possible, when the jr. high and high school students are getting the same amount of food that a first grader is getting that is more like starving them into thin. Growing kids and older kids also more active kids need more calories than a first grader. I am insulted by the fact I pay $2.00 for a meal per child and that meal is being made at a dollar or less per serving. What is healthy about serving a 1/3 cup of green beans with butter and bacon in it when they could get a 1/2 cup or better of just green beans, what are we really saving by serving 1/2 of an apple the only thing that is doing is making the kids not want one because of the apperance of a half apple that has turned brown. We are having kids having stomache issuses and fatigue problems now the food should look appealing it doesn’t then some kids will just not eat but maybe one item offered at lunch how can paying full price for that be justified.I would just as soon have my kids go to a fast food place and order 2 items off the value menu and get more food and nutrition than what is being served to them most days.
