The cross country season is soon winding down to an end with only regionals remaining. The top seven for both girls and boys will be running at regionals. Of course, if they compete well as a team, there is state after that.
The teams competed in league this past Thursday, Oct. 15. The girls finished third overall and the boys finished fourth overall. The top finishers in this meet were Rachelle Harman, sophomore, who placed second, and Connor Strader, freshman, who placed third. For the boy’s side, Garrett VanWinkle, senior, finished fifth and Jacob Tanking, sophomore, ninth.
“We ran great in the conditions that were given to us (mud and cold weather),” VanWinkle said.
At regionals this Saturday, the Cats are competing against 15 teams in Hiawatha starting at 3 p.m. for the girls and 3:30 p.m. for the boys.
“Hiawatha has a fast course looking at the times from their home meet,” Head Coach Darin Stous said.
The stronger teams on the girls side are Wamego, Hayden, Concordia and Clay Center.
“I think we are a top five in this regional, but we will need to run our best times of the year to make it to state as a team,” Stous said.
On the boys side, the stronger teams are Hiawatha, Wamego, Santa Fe Trail and Royal Valley. Stous adds that the boys will need to have their top times as well.
