Lacing up your tennis shoes, looking up at parts of the course you can see, feeling your heart starting to pound and stomach starting to hurt from being nervous, you look at the surrounding competition. The sport is Cross Country. The season is underway and expectations are still high.

“My expectations for the season is for everyone to work together and improve their time from meet to meet,” Darin Stous, head coach said. “We want to finish in the top of league standings at the end of the season and we would like to get to the state meet.”

There are some new changes during this season. Not only is Stous coaching the girls, he also took on the challenge of the boys as well.

“We are doing workouts together so that the competition is better. Boys are pushing girls during practice and some of the girls are pushing the boys along,” Stous said.

“I like it because you have different people to run with,” Jacob Tanking, sophomore said.

Stous thinks Race Day is the most exciting part of Cross Country.

“You never know who is going to win. Every course is different and I look forward to seeing who on the teams steps up and runs well,” Stous said.

Both boys and girls have been competitive. The girls have finished in first or second and the boys have finished in the top five in the four meets in which the team has participated.

The upcoming meet on Thursday, October 1, is at Horton. The teams competing are Rossville, Perry, Jackson Heights, Royal Valley, Horton, Cornerstone, Silver Lake, Doniphan, ACCHS, Sabetha and Pleasant Ridge. It’s usually a large meet with different teams that Holton doesn’t usually run against. In the past, the girls team has placed in the top three the last couple of years. The boys team has finished in the top five. Usually a couple of runners will finish in the top ten on both boys and girls team.
