Is the world really going to end on December 21, 2012? That is perhaps the most frequently chatted question I have heard roaming through the halls of Holton High School. The short answer is most likely no. We as human beings have no possible way of knowing when and how our planet will end.

“There has been experts that have came up with ways that the world could possibly end but there is no real way of telling,” Spade, teacher said.

So what is all this crazy talk? We’ve all heard these doomsday predictions before but we’re still here, and the planet is still here. Why is 2012 so important? Well, the Mayan calendar stops at the end of the year 2012, stirring up all sorts of religious, scientific, astrological and historic reasons why this calendar signals the end of life as we know it.

“I do not believe the world is going to end,” Megan Clark, 11, said. “Who says that the guy making the calendar just didn’t feel like continuing?”

But the Mayans are not the only ones who forecasted the end of the word.

Some believe the world will end on Dec 21,2012. I would not say it is true, but it is fascinating how nine other cultures including the Hopis, Egyptians, Kabbalists, Essenes, Qero elders of Peru, Navajo, Cherokee, Apache, Iroguois Confederacy, Dogon Tribe and Aborignes and one of the world’s greatest prophets, Mayan King Pacal Voltan, could all see this coming. Even though I am not sure if this is going to happen, I still believe everyone should be prepared to leave this world at any time because nobody is going to live forever.

Tiffany McDaniel is one of many Holton High School seniors that had Senior Early release worked into her second semester schedule.

McDaniel said, “ I think that senior early release prepares you for college because I have to watch my time more closely and it’s beneficial because I have more time to do my college class homework.” She also enjoys the fact that she gets to sleep in. Many people use the time that they aren’t in school to work as well.

Courtney Parry said, “ When I get out of school at 11, I go to work at Heartland Veterinary Clinic. “ She also uses her time off to complete scholarships for college.

This year we have a little less than half the senior students taking Senior Early release, however many are taking at least five classes. Holton High school has had Senior Early release for approxmintly eight years.

Kylie miller said,” I think that it is very beneficial to students because in my case there weren’t any other courses to take that would be beneficial to me when entering college. Either some college classes wouldn’t transfer or I had already taken what I could.”

Mrs. Rhule said, “ I believe there needs to be a goal in mind other than just being out of school.”

McDaniel said,” I would recommend that under classmen should consider taking Senior Early release because it does allow you the opportunity to sleep in, and that gives me more energy to pay attention and get my work done in other classes.”

“Don’t sleep your life away!” That’s the quote my mom told me this morning when I got up at nine o’clock. Everyday you should do something that will help you get up and get active. The best thing you can do to keep in shape is exercise! Experts say you should exercise for at least 30 minutes a day. That can be running, lifting weights, or just play games that get your heart rate up for the day.
You can do your homework on the weekend… but let’s get real, we are teenage kids, who is going to want to do that? Everybody should do their homework but most kids are staying up till about one in the morning on Sunday still trying to get it done. Everybody still needs to mentally exercise too. Everybody needs to exercise their brains so all the information doesn’t get pushed way back in their heads. Mr. Weilert once told us that if we don’t study or look at the information at least once a day or every other day then that information is just slowly getting pushed back farther and farther into our brains, so it will never be in our long-term memory.
Another fun thing to do is hang out with friends! When you hang out with your friends it’s a good way to come up with ideas out of the ordinary. Friends can come up with ideas like making tie-dye shirts, taking LOTS of funny pictures, and making funny movies. Anything and everything is possible when you have the creative juices flowing with your friends.
To finish this off, it’s okay to have a lazy day every now and then but don’t be doing it everyday. Get outside and exercise; hang with friends, or even study! Eventually it will help you in the long run and you will be glad you did it.

On October 17th Kyrstie Miller,10, took second at her first ever state golf tournament. The state tournament took place at the Topeka Country Club and was an 18-hole course.

Kyrstie had golfed an 18-hole course only once before, but took it on full force. She tied with Hayden’s Brook Larue with a score of 82. They both went into playoff’s to decide who would be the 4a state champion. Although Kyrstie fell short, she has great accomplishments to be proud of.

The Holton Girl’s Golf team didn’t exist until this year. With the help of a few girl’s, Kyrstie brought toward the idea to the board of having a girl’s golf team. Kyrstie not only placed 2nd in 4a state, she also is the first girl in Holton High School’s history to ever place at a state tournament.
